Charles G. Christlieb

1832–1867

Charles G. Christlieb (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Isaac Christlieb3) [967], born February 14, 1832; died 30 March 1867; married, 1860, Mary Jane Lindsay, born 1832, daughter of Joseph Lindsay and Margaret Shillerbarger. These events occurred in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. “Charles G. Christlieb began life as a school teacher in 1853. In 1855, he traveled through the western states teaching school near Berwick, Ohio, returning to Pennsylvania in 1856. In 1857 he went to Minnesota and pre-empted a tract of land near Winsted in McLeod County, and during the following winter taught a subscription school, being the first school taught at Long Lake, Minnesota. He returned to Pennsylvania and located there permanently, where he served as Justice of the Peace…” The Christlieb Family, pp. 29-30.

In his lifetime, Charles G. Christlieb was employed as a farmer, schoolteacher, and Justice of Peace. The 1860 Federal Census records shows Charles residing with his widowed sister, Catherine Gray, and her children Isaac F. Gray, born 1850, and Emma F. Gray, born 1854.

"Charles G. Christlieb died, 30 March 1867, at Mifflin Crossroads, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania at age 35 years and 3 days.” Newville Star of Valley. “September Public Sale, Mifflin Township farm containing 80 acres and 10 acres of mountain land, Mary Ann Christlieb and Emanuel Snoke, Executors of Chas. G. Christlieb.” Newville Star of Valley, August 21, 1867. “Mary A. Christlieb and Emanuel Snoke, Executors of Charles G. Christlieb, dec’d., late of Mifflin Township, two miles from Snyder’s Hill on the road leading to Three Square Hollow: #1 property – 80 acres, log dwelling, frame barn, Brandy Run running through premises. #2 property – 10 acres of mountain land bounded by the lands of John Lay, John Whistler, and others.” Newville Star of Valley, September 14, 1867.

  • Joseph Lindsay Christlieb (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Isaac Christlieb3, Charles G. Christlieb4) [967]. Joseph reportedly moved to Washington D.C.

  • Isaac Clark Christlieb (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Isaac Christlieb3, Charles G. Christlieb4) [967]. Isaac moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota.
