John Charles Christlieb

1819–1890

John Charles Christlieb, born June 6, 1819, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; died 10 July 1890, Wells County, Indiana; married, 27 March 1845, Stark County, Ohio, Catharine Niesz (Niess/Nees), born 16 September 1824 in Pennsylvania; died 27 February 1900, Wells County, Indiana. No baptismal record or photograph survives for John Charles Christlieb.

On the 24th day of October 1848, John Christlieb and his older brother, Samuel, were “jointly and severally bound to pay to the State of Ohio the full Sum of One Hundred Dollars.” The bond payment was a necessary action in their being appointed guardians of David Niess, Catherine’s brother, who was in his minority. The guardianship appointment was made three years after John Charles Christlieb’s marriage to Catharine Niess. Shown here is John Charles Christlieb’s signature as it appears on the guardianship document. Although he clearly ran out of space when signing, John signed with the spelling, Christleib.

  • Isaac Walter Christlieb (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, John Christlieb3, John Charles Christlieb4) [886], born 5 December 1849, in Stark County, Ohio; died 1 February 1926, in Trumbull County, Ohio; married 25 February 1875, Wells County, Indiana, Eliza Catherine Bailey, born 6 April 1853, Uniondale, Wells County, Indiana; died 16 November 1932, Bristol Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. Isaac Walter and Eliza Bailey Christlieb are both buried in Hillside Cemetery, West Farmington, Ohio.
