"He was the son of Samuel and Ann(Eyre) who also immigrated to the US arriving in New York in 1848 and settled in Chicago. In 1856, the family made staked a claim in McLeod county, MN with his wife and three sons, Ben, Charles and Edwin. The three boys worked the claim, while the father left to do carpentry jobs and returned during the winter months.

In 1862, the entire family abandoned the claim and fled to Hutchinson to escape the Sioux Indians during the massacre of 1862. In early Sept, the same day the Indians attacked Hutchinson, Benjamin was in a party that had headed out to check the stock at the farm. He never made it to the farm. Instead, he saw Indians and had to race to Carver to alert the 3rd regiment of their observations. He returned to Hutchinson and again raced to St. Paul to enter into employment of the government as a dispatch bearer (messenger) and remained that for 3 years. He returned to the McLeod farm afterwards.

In 1871-73, he traveled throughout England.

He wed Miss Minnie Perry on September 14, 1875. She died on August 17, 1876 leaving one child, Minnie A. After his wife's death, Ben sold the farm and moved to Hutchinson and purchased his own place two years later in 1878.

On April 1, 1880, he married a second time, to Miss Emergene Strong who gave him one child, who died in infancy.

His farm in Hutchinson reached 227 acres (as of 1888)."
