“Sarah Christlieb was the only surviving daughter of Catharina (Umberger) and Carl “Charles” Christlieb. According to historian Benjamin Franklin Christlieb, Sarah married Jacob Kautz of Perry County, Pennsylvania, ca. 1820. Jacob Kautz was the son of Daniel Kautz. Jacob and Sarah settled in Mifflin Township, Cumberland County and were blessed with ten children.”
“They immigrated to Michigan in 1854. They traveled in a prairie schooner, camping out on the way. Their new home was in a log house in Sebewa Township, Ionia County. Here they resided for about four years, when they came to Lyons Township, where they spent the remainder of their days.” Noah D. Koutz. “Portrait and Biographical Album of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Michigan, 1891."
“There is some question as to when the family moved to Stark County, Ohio. Some sources place the date as early as 1836 or 1837. However, vital records indicate that the youngest child, Searight, was born in Pennsylvania in 1838. Around 1854, the family moved by covered wagon to Ionia County, Michigan. The Baumgardner family relocated in that county in 1856. Kate Baumgardner died leaving three young sons, Edward, Noah, and Seymour. Noah is listed in the 1860 and 1870 census records as residing with Jacob nd Sarah Koutz in Lyons Township, Ionia County, Michigan.”
“Jacob Koutz died December 7, 1879, at age 89 years, 6 months and 9 days. Sarah and Jacob both died in Lyons Township, Ionia County, and were buried in North Plains Cemetery there.” Alicia Johnson Walker, Grand Ledge, Michigan,1998.
When Sarah’s brother, Charles, died at age 30 in 1817, the inventory of his personal estate shows that her husband, Jacob Kautz/Koutz, owed Charles’ estate $60.97 that had not been collected. Shown below is that entry. In this case, Sarah’s husband is identified as Jacob Coutz.

As part of the settlement of her father’s estate, Sarah purchased 43 acres, 144 perches of her father’s land at $8 per acre. A cash payment was made, as shown in the entry that follows:
