Reunion 2017 - Buckhannon, West Virginia
We thank Amelia Crislip for writing a very informative article on the happenings at the Buckhannon, West Virginia, reunion held July 20-23, 2017. Our headquarters for the reunion was at the Bicentennial Inn, in Buckhannon.
The Eighteenth Biennial Christlieb-Chrislip-Crislip Family Reunion was a weekend filled with laughter, stories, song, good food, and great company. The weekend started on Friday, July 21st, with a trip to historic Chrislip Hollow. Chrislip Hollow is an old family cemetery located near Philippi, West Virginia, where some of the most notable Christlieb ancestors are buried. Ned Crislip (association president) led the group on a tour of the cemetery, recounting the histories of our ancestors, including Jacob and Nancy Christlieb and their children, William, Isaac, Catherine, Samuel, and William. Despite a downpour mid-visit, the trip was a success, and the cemetery looked beautiful with flowers donated by Mildred McGee Beer. Later that evening, the family gathered for a barbecue with a beautiful display of food. A delightful selection of music was played on the piano by Jacob Clyde Crislip, family stories and folklore were recounted by Lee Wise (association webmaster), and Ned Crislip, and the group indulged in song to finish out the night.
Saturday morning began with a group breakfast, shortly followed by a few welcoming words from Ned and Bill Crislip, the association’s president and vice president. Again, the traditional reading of the “Amorbach Letter” was presented by Lee Wise showing a video of former president, Wendell Lauth, reading the Amorbach Letter in the Schlosskriche, in Bad Dürkheim, Germany. The main presentation of the morning was given by Mildred McGee Beer, a descendant of Abram Chrislip and Amanda Britton, who were the subject of Mildred's talk. Later that evening, the family gathered again for a lovely banquet. There was a door prize drawing that raised over $500 for the family scholarship fund, more piano selections by Jacob Clyde Crislip, and other announcements. The highlight of the evening was a presentation by guest speaker, Noel W. Tenney, the repository director of the Upshur County Historical Society.
Please note: Mildred McGee Beer's recorded presentation may be found in our Archives page.
The last day of the reunion was Sunday. The group gathered for the last time for a group breakfast and business meeting. At the meeting, business was discussed, all association officers were reelected, and we bid our farewells. In total, the reunion was planned perfectly and it was a wonderful bonding experience. We hope to see you at the next one!
