The transcription of the Amorbach Letter, in German, reads:

Dieser Brief ist d. 18ten von Jacquin dahie beantworthet worden, daβ gdst. Herrschafft die Pathen stette gerne auffstehen.

Dem Hochgebornen Graffen und Herrn, Herrn Christian Carl Reinhard, Graffen zu Leiningen und Dachsburg, Herrn zu Aspremont, Brug, Bürgel und Reippoltskirchen; unserm gnädigsten Graffen und Herrn, zu Heddesheim.

Hochgeborner Graff, Gnädigster Graff und Herr.

Eür Hochgräffl. Gnd. geruhen gnädigst zu erlauben, daβ wir uns unterwinden, Denenselben demütigst anzuzeigen, wasmaβen zu Ende des verwichenen Jahres eine ledige junge Manns-Person aus dem Jüdenthum, SIMON genannt, von Frankenstein gebürtig, sich bey uns angegeben und sehr sehnlich gebeten, daβ wir sie in der Christlichen Lehre unterrichten und zur heiligen Tauff gelangeen laβen möchten; welches wir auch, so ungerne wir es unternomen, iedennoch nicht haben abschlagen können. Nun ist es, durch died Gnade Gottes, so weit mit dem Unterricht gekomen, daβ wir entschloβen sind, nechst künfftigen Sonntag Trinitatis den heiligen Tauff-Actum in dem Namen Dreyeiningen Gottes vorzunehmen, und geloben der unterthänigsten Hoffnung, daβ Eür Hochgräff. Gnd. Es nicht ungnädig zu deüten geruchen werden, wenn wir uns erkühnen, Dero Hohe HochgräffL. Frau Gemahlin Gnd., und Hochgeboren gnädigster Contessignen, zu Hohen Tauffzeugen dabey demüthigst zu erbitten. Werden es demnach vor eine ganz besondere Marque Dero preiβwürdigsten hohen Hulden ansehen und mit demüthigsten Dank erkennen, wann Eür Hochgräffl. Gnd. Gnädigst geruhen wolten, iemanden zu verordnen, so Dero Hochgräffl. Stellen dabey vertretten möchte. Es wird der Kirchgang aus allhiesiger Superintendur geschehen und nachmittags um 1. Uhr vor sich gehen. Wir empfehlen uns anbey, nebst dem Neophyto, zu hohen Hochgräffl. Hulden und erstreben mit vollkomenster Devotion, Hochgeborner Graff, Gnädigster Graff und Herr, Eür Hochgräffl. This letter was answered here on the 18^th by Jacquin that your gracious Lord would be glad to stand as a baptismal sponsor.

To the Noble Count and Lord, Lord Christian Carl Reinhard, Count of Leiningen and Dachsburg, Lord at Aspermont, Brugges, Brussels and Reipoltskirchen, our most Gracious Count and Lord at Heddesheim:

Noble Count, Most Gracious Count and Lord, may it please you to allow most graciously that we attempt to inform you most humbly that at the end of the previous year an unmarried young male person from Jewry, named Simon, a native of Frankenstein, approached us and requested very earnestly that we instruct him in Christian doctrine and that he be allowed to receive Holy Baptism, which we could not refuse, no matter how unwilling we were at first to do so. Now, by the grace of God, the instruction is so far along that we have decided to perform the act of Holy Baptism on the upcoming Trinity Sunday in the name of the Triune God, and we entertain the most humble hope that your most gracious Count might not deem it ungracious if we are so bold as to request the person of your most gracious count together with your most gracious wife and gracious Countesses most humbly to appear there as noble sponsors. Therefore we would regard it as a most special mark of your most praiseworthy high graciousness and recognize it with the most humble thanks if it please your most gracious Count most graciously to appoint somebody to represent your grace there. The procession to the church will take place from the Superintendent’s office here and will begin at 1 o’clock. We pay respects, together with the new convert, to the grace of your gracious Count, and strive with the most complete devotion, Noble Count, Most Gracious Count and Lord, Your Grace.

It is probable that similar letters were sent to other Leiningen Counts in the region and that this is the only one to have survived. For sure, the Elector of the Palatinate, Prince Carl Philipp III, was informed of the impending baptism/conversion, as he was the principle dignitary in attendance on that day.

In earlier generations, it was the custom for local sovereigns to endorse converts to Christianity; but, that tradition had, for the most part, become a thing of the past. In the case of Friedrich Carl, however, all stops seem to have been pulled for the occasion.

“Den 20 Maii, ward Festo Trinitatis wurde nachmittags ein Jüngling getaufft, von jüdischer Herkunft, Simon genannt, von Franckenstien gebürt. Wurde Fridrich Carl (Nachtrag: Christlieb) genennet, und waren hohe Tauffzeugen: Ihro verwittibt Hochfürstl. Durchl. Unsers gnädigsten Hn. Graffens und dero Frau Gemahlin, wie auch des jungen Herrn Hochgräffl. Excellenzien, benebenst denen Hochgräffl. Hauβ Heddesheim; Hn. Baron von Beusten, Königl. Dänischen un Churpfälzischen Hn. Geheimen Raths und Salinen-Direcotris Freyherrl. Excellenz; sämbtl. Sllhiesige hichgräffl. Canzley-Bediente; Ein löbl. Bürgermeister und Aechter, item das sämbtl. löbl.
